Hobey Baker Memorial Award Foundation
In 1991, the senior members of the Hobey Baker Memorial Awards Committee (“Committee”) determined that a Foundation should be formed to ensure the continued protection and growth of this prestigious award. The direction was taken, the research was performed and the Hobey Baker Memorial Award Foundation (“Foundation”) was legally established. In 1992, the Foundation became a reality and is formally governed by a Board of Directors.
Today, the Committee and an Executive Director/Director of Development report directly to the Foundation. Membership in the Foundation is open to current and past Chairmen of the Committee, Past Hobey Baker Memorial Award Winners, Past Hobey Baker Memorial Award Legends of Hockey, and others as determined by the Foundation’s Board of Directors.
The Foundation possesses ownership over all rights to the Hobey Baker Memorial Award and related properties. The Foundation has the ultimate responsibility to maintain the quality and integrity of the Annual Award Announcement and Banquet, as well as, the Hobey Baker Brand. The Foundation’s primary charge is to ensure the long-term stewardship, success and expansion of the Hobey Baker Brand.
To accomplish these goals, the Foundation undertakes the following major actions:
1. Develop strategic vision for the annual award and new events;
2. Develop and maintain partnerships with entities whose interests and goals are aligned with Hobey Baker’s;
3. Negotiate contracts to carry out the mission and approved activities of Hobey Baker.
Results of the Foundation’s efforts to improve the award include the “Hobey Hat Trick,” whereby the top three candidates are announced prior to the announcement of the Winner at the Frozen Four Hockey Tournament.
We are currently presenting the “High School Character Award” to high school hockey players showing exemplary character and sportsmanship. In Minnesota, Michigan and Rhode Island and more it is awarded to both boy and girl players, and in Massachusetts, and Wisconsin currently just to boys. We are also pursuing other state programs.
This year we presented in connection with Josten’s, our corporate sponsor, the very coveted Hobey Baker Memorial Award Ring during “On Rink Center Ice Ceremonies” to the following past Hobey Baker Memorial Award Winner.
Tony Hrkac of the University of North Dakota
The Foundation is a non-profit organization; therefore donations to the Foundation are tax deductible, as well as, a portion of the cost of tickets to our annual Awards Banquet.
